M. Müller & Sohn - The system of the future – since 1891
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Michael Müller revolutionizes the clothing trade with his patternmaking system.
“The system of the future”- an ambitious name for a patternmaking system. However, Michael Müller, the ingenious Munich master-tailor, had a vision of a pattern construction system, which takes different figure proportions exactly into account, yet is easy to apply, time-saving and simple to learn. His vision should soon become reality.

The “Müller-System”, as it was called, is still today the pattern system of the future for the clothing trade. Now, 70 per cent of all pattern programs world-wide are based on the system M. Müller & Sohn.

The cutting as “basis of the trade”
The success story of the pattern system M. Müller & Sohn began in 1891 in Munich. Back then, the so-called “Herrgöttle” - fairly accurate paper models which permitted only a rough cut - still hung on the walls in most tailor shops. “A common evil, from which many specialized tailors suffer, is the uncertainty about the cutting of the garments. This art (and as such we declare confidently) is nevertheless the first and principal foundation of our trade.” This was how Michael Müller characterized the way garments were cut about 125 years ago.

“The Müller-System” revolutionizes cutting
This construction system based on proportional calculation was a revolutionary innovation when Michael Müller developed it. The “Müller-System” experienced a rapid spread, carried particularly by its own cutting school, “Deutsche Bekleidungsakademie”, and by their published specialized journals about fashion and patternmaking. Since 1931 these technical periodicals appear under the joint name RUNDSCHAU.

Pattern design in the RUNDSCHAU magazine
The RUNDSCHAU, which is published monthly with one edition each for ladies’ and men’s wear, provides regularly instructions for learning and expanding the pattern system of M. Müller & Sohn as well as up-to-date reports about the fashion industry and the clothing trade.

Pattern drafting for basic blocks and the development of design patterns are described with detailed step-by-step illustrations in the expert articles. You can order a subscription for the RUNDSCHAU here in our web shop.

Specialized books from the RUNDSCHAU publishing house
In 1890 Michael Müller published his first technical book “Neueste praktische Zuschneidekunst – System Zukunft” (the newest practical cutting art – a system of the future). Numerous specialized publications followed this first fundamental work.

More than 70 titles are currently published in the technical books and expert articles of the RUNDSCHAU publishing house with general and specific questions about patternmaking as well as special publications on topics pertaining to tailoring and dressmaking. You can order the specialized books from the RUNDSCHAU publishing house here online.

International success
Pattern makers for industrial manufacturers as well as made-to-measure tailors draft their basic blocks and design patterns after the patternmaking system M. Müller & Sohn. The expert articles in the RUNDSCHAU magazine and the technical publications from the RUNDSCHAU publishing house are valued teaching materials for fashion schools as well as master-tailor classes and count as the common professional reading of dressmakers, pattern makers, fashion designers and tailors.

The RUNDSCHAU is read worldwide and today more than 70 per cent of all pattern programmes are based on the system M. Müller & Sohn. A system of the future – today more than ever.

The pattern system is present around the globe
With over 60 per cent market share worldwide, the pattern system M. Müller & Sohn is represented almost anywhere when it comes to professional tailoring.

As the patternmaking system for the entire apparel industry, it is highly regarded by patternmakers in industrial manufacturing, as well as by fashion designers and made-to-measure tailors.

The principles of the pattern system M. Müller & Sohn
The pattern system M. Müller & Sohn is based on a construction system with proportional calculations.

The first step is to measure the so-called main body measurements directly on the body. In the second step, the auxiliary measurements are then calculated from the main body measurements. The auxiliary measurements can also be taken on the body to determine figure divergences.

Figure proportions
This pattern system takes different figure proportions exactly into account, is easy to apply, time-saving and simple to learn.

For people with figure problems or nonstandard figure proportions, the patterns are constructed with modified proportional rules. The figure posture can be determined by comparing the measurements of the front length and the back length proportionally with one another.

Excellent fit and adaptive application
The pattern system M. Müller & Sohn shows its strengths both for industrial manufacturing as well as for made-to-measure tailoring.

An advantage in addition to the exceptional fit is the possibility of modifying basic patterns with minimal effort to develop several design variations from one pattern.

A high degree of flexibility and efficiency is achieved as a result of this modular pattern construction.

Patternmaking on the computer
The system M. Müller & Sohn is also used as the basis for CAD – pattern constructions. Computer systems with pattern design on the basis of M. Müller & Sohn are e.g. Grafis...

Application in garment industry, fashion design and made-to-measure tailoring
Probably no other pattern system finds a so wide application as M. Müller & Sohn
The market share of M. Müller & Sohn amounts to almost 100 per cent among made-to-measure tailors and it is top-rated in other areas of the clothing industry as well as in the educational sector.

Specialized books and expert articles in the RUNDSCHAU
The system is continuously developed and complemented by expert articles and ready-made patterns in the RUNDSCHAU as well as by a wide range of professional publications from the RUNDSCHAU publishing company.
